Sedation Dentistry

Even with the latest technology that makes modern dentistry gentler than ever before, many people are still apprehensive about going to the dentist. There many reasons for this apprehension. Sedation dentistry places you in a relaxed state. This means you will likely have little or no memory of having any dental work done (depending on the method of sedation). Furthermore, you will have minimal if any pain or discomfort. In many ways being sedated provides an opportunity for the dentist to perform more work, higher quality work and all in a safe stress free environment. One of our team members will be with you the whole time and you will be monitored by equipment similar to that used in a hospital for monitoring vital signs.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)

This is a great option for those who are a little anxious and just want to take that edge off. Nitrous sedation has been around for many years and is still considered to be the safest sedation technique for young and old. This technique has a very rapid onset and wears off almost as fast. There is no memory impairment, and there is no need to be escorted home by someone. You will be 100% mentally fit to continue your scheduled day (go to work, to school, to the gym etc…) Please call to see if this is the right choice for you.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a great choice if you would like receive higher amounts of sedation than laughing gas. Upon arrival at Vita Dental you will be given a small pill to take and then be given an hour to relax and let the sedation settle in. You will then be seated in a comfortable chair and covered by a warm blanket. Before starting treatment we will ensure that you are completely comfortable. You will be awake for the treatment, just much more relaxed. There may be a little memory impairment with this type of sedation, but not as much as IV sedation.  Since you will be too sedated to drive yourself you need to be accompanied to and from your appointment by an adult friend or family member.

Intravenous Moderate Sedation (IV Sedation)

For those who want even more sedation this is the choice for you. IV sedation has a much more rapid onset than oral sedation. The dentist can control the amount of medication given to you; he can do it quickly and precisely (which cannot be done with oral sedation). The dentist can also very quickly reverse the sedation if necessary. All these properties are what makes IV sedation a safer and preferred type of sedation. As with oral sedation, you will need to be accompanied home by an adult or family member.
